TRANSLATION PROJECT

I have been a Jojo fan since 1989 when I read (well... saw) my first Shonen Jump manga. The third series had just begun and I was instantly captured by the artwork. Later on, as I learned Japanese, I appreciated the story as well.

The Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Battle Card Game was created in 2007 by Bandai for their CARDDAS line. The rules are simple and, as you will discover as we go forward, have quite a bit of strategy where even powerful cards can be worthless if the right deck is created.

I will be taking the rules page by page (FOUND HERE) and translating them as well as the cards. I hope to make them in an easilly printable form so that one may print them out and keep them either beside their playing area or even cut them out and slide them into card sleeves.

If anyone would like to help, I will gladly take it. Email me to let me know of your interest and I will let you know which pages of the rulebook to take as that is my personal second priority. Please only offer if you read Japanese. Please don't use online translation engines as they are not even 40% accurate.

And rest assured that I will give you not only full credit, but post links to your sites below as well.

If you would like to email me, then please send requests to:

noriaki_kakyouin(at)hotmail(dot)com

I have had this email for nine years now, and don't plan on changing it soon.

Who is Noriaki Kakyouin? Well, he is a heroic character from a Japanese manga (comic) called 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I have been a fan of the story since 1989. Noriaki Kakyouin was my favorite character and when I first got 'email' in 1999 I was trying to think of what name to make for my account. I have been 'Noriaki' ever since.

I am translating the special rules for using the tarot cards in Jojo ABC games which were posted just last night. I will put those onto the tarot card translations area later on.

Basically, you compile a deck of tarot cards and keep them to one side of the game. On your hand-refresh phase, you can flip over a card. Some characters and stands react to which card you have flipped over. When they use their special power with a tarot card, the tarot card is discarded from play to its own discard pile.

The company has also posted rules for playing two games with the poker cards and tarot cards separately... which sounds like fun too. One is a two person game and one is a three person game.

So I have started putting links to the actual card images on the main translation pages. If you click on the card names, you will get a small image of that card. I may start scanning the cards I have and upload them later on, but for now (until I get all the HTML links done) this will have to do. I hope that's ok.

I also became a member of the STARDUST CRUSADERS which is an Araki/Jojo translation group started from the Jojo Message Boards. Some of them are helping with some of the rules pages. I will post names when we get the results in. Thanks a lot, guys.

Also, I have uploaded a lovely little video to show how to use the sleeve-ready translations. You can tape them to the front of the sleeve, or use this method.

With the help of the scanlations I talked about last night, I finally got everything fixed. 100%, Bay-bay!

Sleeve friendly versions should all be up by noon MST today as well. This weekend I will post the page on how to use them.

Now, please tell all the Jojo sites about me!

I'm getting very close now. After re-discovering the scanlation site for the jojo series (see link below as well) I have been able to get MANY of the names for the cards that I wasn't able to before.

Everything should be 100% by Friday afternoon.

Additionally, I'll be able to put the card-sleeve friendly versions up shortly afterwards (two are up right now).

For the card-sleeve friendly versions, I have made the translations (for cards that have them) small and wide enough to fit inside of a protective card sleeve. You'll just download the files, print out the pages, take a scissors to them, and slide them into the card sleeves.

If you don't want to do that much work, you can just tape them to the front of the card sleeves. It'll make shuffling more difficult, though.

Ok. Found quite a few errors in the first three sets and I fixed them, but haven't uploaded them again. I will do that when I am 100% done.

Also note that I have a space reserved for when I make them all card-sleeve friendly.

What this means, is that you can download the translations for the cards, cut them out, and slide them easilly into their respective sleeves so they sit above the cards themselves... so you don't have to look at big lists to find out what a card does. I think this will be a nice addition.

I will make them small enough so that they don't impede on any important information or overlap the images (too much).

I'll get this done when I am 100% complete for the three sets.

I should have pages 1-18 up and done with by tonight. Since I got it done so quickly, there is no need for a quick-start rules.

I do regret that my Japanese language skills are not up to snuff and I didn't translate verbatim. My apologies to purists.

My next task will be making sure that sets 1, 2 & 3 are perfect. Hopefully within the next few days you will see these 90s turning into 100s!

When that is all done, I will be sending the link to this site to all the Jojo Card sites. I encourage you to help me do that. Thanks.

Pages 19-23 are a low priority for me... as it gets into the more difficult Japanese that I have trouble understanding. If someone wants to translate these, I will give you full credit.

I have most of season 3 translated and it is up. Now, with the majority of the cards translated (note that they are not at 100% yet) I will be working on quick-start rules of my own, and translating the rulebook.

I do regret that my Japanese language skills are not up to snuff and I probably won't be able to translate verbatim. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it... otherwise, close-enough is the best I can do.

Some more rulebook pages are up.

Wanted to pass on the place that I bought the set 3 cards. A really nice guy in Japan: Paper Moon Japan,. His prices are VERY competitive for importing these cards. Other places have been wanting to charge me $75 for a box not including shipping, but P.M.J. doesn't try to wring you dry. He's also VERY good at communicating to you as quickly as he can. So, by all means, check his store out.

Currently, he has two boxes for sale.

So I finally got a box of 3rd season boosters... and the cards look so spiffy! I know, I know... it's strange that I would be translating something before I even saw the cards, but that's the kind of Jojo fan I am. Hell, if I had the cash I'd buy THIS. Yeah, I'm that much of a Jojo freak.

Anyways, I am also getting in a box of season 1 boosters and a season 3 starter deck as well.

The cards are interesting in that you get 7 garanteed commons and 4 garanteed uncommons. Rares seem to be every-other pack, although not in that order. Out of 15 packs I only got 7 rares. So, after I get the starter pack, I will only be missing 8 rares for the 3rd season.

Anyways, I can't wait until I am done with the translating so I can get my friend RAZMA into this game. I'm sure that some of you regular visitors are excited too... or else you wouldn't be returning as often as you do.

Thanks for that, by the way. Coming here so often. I really do appreciate it.

Second season is up as much as I feel comfortable with my translations. Once again, if you can, feel free to let me know where I was wrong and I will give you full credit.

I am now working on the third season, although I do not know how long THAT one will take. I hope to have it done by the end of the weekend, but we will see... this is going to be a busy weekend.

The third season cards I ordered are almost in and I am looking forward to making a video of what they look like, what the rarity distribution is, and other things like that.

So I changed the Appearing Costs on several of the cards as I forgot that some of them have dots in-between them. These dots indicate that you do not have to go in order left-to-right to make them appear.

I also changed the word "Summoning" to "Appearing".

I am working on the second series and hope to be done before Friday. This one's a toughie, though. Certain terms are really throwing me off. I will post what I have by Friday and, what I have that I am unsure of, I will release in just Japanese until I have a comfortable translation.

I also added the action symbols. These will be further explained in the rules when I get those translated.

Finally, I am working on a QUICK-START rules sheet. That should be done and up by the weekend.

FINALLY! I have the first series up. Now you may note that it looks funky. Well, that's because I copied everything from the main site, pasted it onto WORD, worked the translations, and saved the WORD file as HTML.

The good thing about this was that I got it done withough using HTML. The bad thing is that all my mess-ups and quick-fixes really show out. I'll fix that tonight.

98% done? What do you mean? Well, there were some words I just couldn't translate. My Japanese is ok, but not great... so if any of you can help me out I would give you full credit where credit is due.

I also added the Summoning/Activation costs for each card. This is the cost (as you will find out when I get the rules done) that is required to bring them out. Just like in "Magic The Gathering".

Unlike "MTG", each card can act as "mana" as well... hence the symbol at the top left of the card. So when you play, you need to figure out if you want to use it as a character and battle with it, or if you need to place it into your "Lineage" area for summoning other cards.

Anywhoo... hope you like. Now onto season 2.

OH! And I would also be amiss to mention the OTHER Jojo Card Game out there done privately by a pretty decent chibi-artist: JOJO COLOSSEUM

Ok. The first, second, and third series translations will go up tomorrow. I have 75%+ of the first season translated and some of the second and third.

What I don't have translated I will have in Japanese. That way, as I continue to translate, I will replace the Japanese with English.

I do ask that if you read Japanese to double-check my work as I think I have done a good job, but may have typos.

TRANSLATION INFO:

* I used the word "hamon" to represent the energy manipulation that is in the first two books. I ran a poll on the Jojo forum to see which they would prefer and "hamon" won astoundingly.
* I also use the Japanese symbols for the upper left hand corner. I have the English equivalent next to it for informational purposes.
* Costs have also kept the kanji for easy recognition when playing.
* As for names, I use the English translation of Jojo by VIZ and the book "Jojo 6251". Even if they look misspelled, this is for the purists out there... one of them being me.
* Quotes for the Event cards have also ben taken from the English translation when I can. Otherwise, I have used the English equivalent that I know of (for example, not all English speaking people know what 'Jan-Ken' is... so I have used 'Rock, Paper, Scissors').
* The God cards do not have the word "God" or "Goddess" in front of them. So 'Geb' is not 'God Geb'.

I have replaced pages 3 and 17 of the rulebook with jpgs from the official site. I will re-scale them tomorrow. These have information I couldn't get (for some odd reason) from the adobe file.

I have a box of third series boosters coming in this Thursday or Friday. GLEE! I have gotten some hints, tips, and leads on where to get other series, but I can't get any until my next paycheque as it's my wife's 29th birthday this coming Sunday (the 27th). Anyways, I'll get pictures.

January 17th 2008

So I know it's not a lot of instant progress, but page 4 is up. Yes, only three lines. WOO!

Like I said, I am working on the cards first... so those are priority. But as I get pages done I will post them.

I have also been working around making a quick rules sheet that explains the basics of the game. I'll probably post that before Sunday.

January 14th 2008

I begin the translation and make the website.

You'll notice that the page has no links to translations. Well, I haven't finished translating them. DUH! As I do, you will find the links turning on. I might not get to making the translations 'cards-sleeve-size' right away, but eventually they all will be.

I have, however, placed images of the 22 pages that I will be translating onto the various pages. There still is only one link (to the rulebook cover art) and links internally from there... but when I get pages done I will place them on the main menu.
